Contemporary dance is a popular form of dance that developed in the mid 20th century, and is strongly influenced by ballet and jazz. A 'free-er' form of ballet, it is characterised with floor work, fall and recovery, improvisation and unpredictable rhythm and speed.

The Academy Contemporary program is popular with all levels and complements our other styles extremely well. Students train one hour a week in contemporary, so it's a very good 2nd style of dance to include in a program at The Academy. Our syllabus students love the fact they can train solidly in ballet, jazz and tap, then have Contemporary to really explore the improvisation elements of dance.
